Between 1941 and 1944, more than a million Jewish children, women and men were murdered in mass shootings during the German occupation of what is now Ukraine and buried in numerous pits. The international project »Protecting Memory« has set itself the goal of designing neglected and forgotten mass graves of Jews and Roma as worthy places of remembrance and information and to preserve the memory of the victims for the present and the future.

Inauguration of the Holocaust Memorial Site near Barashi, Ukraine
The film shows impressions of the inauguration ceremony of the memorial site near Barashi, Shytomyr area, Ukraine.
In the autumn of 1941, at least 95 Jews from Barashi and the surrounding area were shot dead by German and local police officers.
Numerous residents, students, international guests and visitors commemorated the victims together on 17 September 2019. The memorial site was designed in 2019 as part of the project “Preserve Memory” funded by the Foreign Office.
