On January 27, 1945, the Red Army liberated the Auschwitz concentration camp. Since the beginning of 1942, at least 1.1 million people had been murdered there, including about one million Jews and many tens of thousands of Sinti, Roma, and Poles.
In 1996, January 27 was officially declared the Day of Remembrance for the Victims of National Socialism by the then Federal President Roman Herzog. It has been commemorated every year since then to preserve the memory of the victims.
