About the documentary
On December 8, 1941, in a small village around 70 kilometers northwest of Łódź, several hundred Jews were murdered with engine exhaust fumes. The commissioning of the Kulmhof extermination site on the Ner (Chełmno nad Nerem) by the SS Special Detachment Lange marked the beginning of the National Socialist mass killing of European Jews using poison gas. Using mobile gas chambers, so-called “gas vans,” the SS systematically murdered Jews and other victims.
Directed by Ashton Gleckman and narrated by Liev Schreiber, “The Quiet Village” sheds light on the history of Kulmhof through testimonies from survivors, witnesses, perpetrators, and their descendants.
By linking personal accounts with historical research, the documentary draws attention to an often overlooked chapter of the Holocaust and the continuing importance of remembrance.
