On June 28, 2023, the Schwarzkopf Foundation, together with the Stiftung Denkmal, invited to a contemporary witness talk with Kurt Hillmann at Sophienstra\u00dfe 28\/29. Uwe Neum\u00e4rker, Director of the Stiftung Denkmal, welcomed the event. The discussion was moderated by Paula H. Winkler, who is currently completing an FSJ at the Schwarzkopf Foundation. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Kurt Hillmann was born in Berlin in 1933 as the son of a Jewish Polish mother and a German father. He had experiences with anti-Semitism at an early age. Later, his life is marked by war: bombing raids, air raids, burning houses. In 1944 he managed to go into hiding in a home for children suffering from tuberculosis in the Allg\u00e4u region. When Hillmann returned to Berlin in October 1945 to visit his father, he learned that his mother had died because no doctor wanted to treat her. All of his mother’s relatives, the Singer and Jakubowicz families, were first deported to the Litzmannstadt ghetto and later murdered in the Kulmhof extermination camp with the exhaust fumes of trucks.<\/div>\n

Kurt Hillmann has been involved as a contemporary witness for years.
In an interview at the Schwarzkopf Foundation, he talks about his life and emphasizes how important it is to stand up against anti-Semitism and discrimination: “Just talking about it is not enough, you have to act! […] I saw everything on the street. Everyone else was blind, saw nothing, heard nothing, knew nothing.”
He tells the young audience: “It’s not your fault what happened back then. But you have a great responsibility not to make sure it happens again.”<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
