This year\u2019s Genealogies of Memory conference organised by the European Network Remembrance and Solidarity takes place on 4\u201326 November 2020.<\/strong> Its tenth edition is titled The Holocaust between Global and Local Perspectives<\/em><\/strong>. Like each year, the event brings together an international milieu of researchers from Canada, United States, Poland, Germany, France, Hungary, Great Britain, Israel, South Korea and elsewhere. Due to the current epidemiological situation, this year the conference is going to be held in the form of eight online sessions broadcast via ENRS channels on YouTube and Facebook.<\/p>\n

The jubilee edition of the event is dedicated to the current state of Holocaust memory research. Topics for discussion include the globalisation and universalisation of the meaning of the Holocaust, the more recently postulated empirical turn in Holocaust (memory) studies towards primary texts and sources, as well as local spaces and materialities.<\/p>\n

Every year, Genealogies of Memory brings together the most outstanding researchers in the field of memory studies from around the world. In 2020, keynote lectures will be delivered by Omer Bartov (Brown University, Providence, RI, USA), Piotr Cywi\u0144ski (Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum, Poland), Ewa Doma\u0144ska (Adam Mickiewicz University Pozna\u0144, Poland, and Stanford University, USA), Jackie Feldman (Ben Gurion University of the Negev, Israel), Dorota G\u0142owacka (University of Kings’ College, Halifax, Canada), \u00c9va Kov\u00e1cs (Vienna Wiesenthal Institute for Holocaust Studies, Austria), Mindaugas Kvietkauskas (Minister of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania), and Daniel Levy (Stony Brook University, New York, USA).<\/p>\n

Launched in 2011, the annual conference Genealogies of Memory is one of the main projects carried out by the ENRS in cooperation with academic partners. The series helps strengthen academic exchange, in particular by creating an international platform for dialogue and exchange of academic experiences between scholars representing various generations, schools, methodological strategies and research practices.<\/p>\n

Our proposal is to approach memory with historical sensitivity. We want to emphasise the seemingly obvious: that historical experiences shape specific ensuing memory processes. Also, research on memory should take into account the close relation between history and memory, focusing on how historical processes shape memory processes<\/em>, say Dr Ma\u0142gorzata Pakier and Dr Joanna Wawrzyniak, the conceptual team behind the project and its initiators.<\/p>\n
