Videoarchiv and Interview Project 7

Picture: Visitor watching a video interview

At the end of the tour through the exhibition, visitors have the opportunity to engage with the life stories of survivors in more than 150 video interviews.

The interviews have been conducted either by the Foundation or by other institutions: the Video Archive of the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe is the only place where part of the significant Fortunoff Video Archive for Holocaust Testimonies of Yale University is publicly presented. The archive also contains interviews from Potsdam University’s »Archive of Memory«, the Documentation and Cultural Centre of German Sinti and Roma in Heidelberg, and other collections.

The interviews are all part of a database that allows visitors to explore the testimonies at computer terminals. The interview footage is presented in full length and unedited. Various search options and detailed explanatory texts as well as the presentation of transcripts, translations, content and thematic indices, biographical data and brief biographies enable visitors to find specific passages within the testimonies, many of which are several hours long. This allows for unique insights into these historical sources, which are becoming ever more important.

The Video Archive is open on Sundays during the regular opening times of the exhibition at the Information Centre.

Introductory sessions to the Video Archive can be booked via the Visitor Service.
